Homestead

Avoca-on-Darling Hospitality Wentworth 'Avoca' is a heritage homestead destination on the Darling River near the Murray-Darling Junction, Wentworth & Mildura, gateways to outback NSW. The property is a special destination for tourists seeking peace & quiet in the sun, alongside Australia's longest river, the high banks of which are lined with massive river red gums. It is a haven for a wide variety of native birds & animals, & especially homo sapiens! Day trips can be comfortably made to Mildura, Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, Mungo International Heritage Park, Pooncarie, Lake Victoria, & the Riverland towns of Renmark, Berri, Loxton, & Barmera on Lake Bonney. It is also a handy stopover for motorists travelling to or from Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Broken Hill, Menindee or other outback regions. Your accommodation is in the well preserved heritage homestead constructed in stone & pine logs, & surrounded by acres of lawns, rose gardens, a variety of native & exotic trees, citrus grove, orchard & vegetable garden. Beyond the complex are outbuildings of pine logs & red gum slabs. Further beyond are acres of saltbush, box trees, wild flowers & other native plants & part of a disused flood irrigation system. The river frontage stretches downstream for over 1 km. 'Avoca' was one of the first stations in the district &, in its heyday, covered 1,100 square miles. The Homestead at the 'Head Station' is only 26 km from the historic town of Wentworth, near the Murray-Darling River Junction & the Port of Wentworth which was once the busiest inland port in Australia. The town's main event, the Annual Wentworth Cup Race Meeting is run on Melbourne Cup Day, always the first Tuesday in November, but the calendar is busy with other events & there are lots of attractions to visit.
